Journalism Value Project: New Report on Public Interest Journalism in Europe

A new report captures the state of independently funded public interest journalism in Europe.

How can these newsrooms turn their undisputable societal value into financially stable business models? This is the key question for a whole emerging sector of rather young and small media outlets, that are often registered as non-profits and trying to fill informational gaps left by legacy media’s decline. For more than a year, Netzwerk Recherche has studied the sector as part of the “Journalism Value Project” – an EU funded collaborative effort to better understand and support independent public interest newsrooms in Europe.

On Thursday, November 28th, we are releasing a new report and map based on the results of our survey and invite you to take part in an open floor discussion in one of the most acclaimed venues for journalism at present, Publix in Berlin. The in-person event will take place from 10 to 11:30 a.m. and will bring stakeholders from the field and the funding world at the table. Due to capacity constraints, registration is mandatory.

The report was funded by the EU Commission and financially supported by the Journalism Funders Forum. It’s one of three pillars of the “Journalism Value Project”, which is run by and for non-profit independent media organisations, including members of Reference – the European Independent Media Circle, and Netzwerk Recherche, the German Association of Investigative Journalists.
